GeneralContext Cross, south view.
Location churchyard at Gosforth.
Dimensions 442cm (174'') high.
GeneralContext Stone type: medium-grained red sandstone.
GeneralDescription South view of Cross, dated to the first half of the tenth century.
GeneralDescription There are traces of a cabled border moulding on the ring of the head. The end of the arm has a panel of framed four-strand plain plait.
GeneralDescription At the top of the rectangular part of the shaft is a three-strand plain plait ending in a spiral below. The top end has a beast head.
GeneralDescription After this there is a run of ring-chain, which has an animal-head at the top.
GeneralDescription Underneath this there is a horned quadruped (stag/hart).
GeneralDescription Below this there is a wolf/dog whose legs are tangled in interlace formed by thin strands. He is set sideways on the shaft.
GeneralDescription Next there is a belted horseman. His left hand holds a bridle and his right hand holds a spear behind the horse. The feet of the horse are set over a horizontal strip of three-strand plain plait.
GeneralDescription At the base of the panel there is a creature, seen in profile, with pointed, open jaws, peaked forehead, and a round eye. His lower parts are interlaced with his arm.
