A graduate of UCC, Aidan Doyle studied for a PhD in linguistics in Poland, where he taught for a number of years. He also spent some time Germany as a Humboldt Fellow, working on a post-doctoral degree (habilitation), which he obtained in 2004. He returned to UCC in 2002.

In the Irish department, he teaches modules on phonetics, the social and cultural history of Irish, academic writing (MA), and practical language classes.

Research: His main area of research is general linguistics, with a special emphasis on morphology, syntax, language contact, and historical linguistics. He is also interested in translation theory and the relation between language and identity.

Research Interests

Linguistics, especially the morphology and syntax of Irish.
Translation studies.
The link between language and nationalist ideology, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Teaching Interests

In the Irish department  I teach undergraduate modules on language (GA 2023, GA 3019), and a module on writing and editing for the MA (GA 6001). I have also taught the following literature module: GA 2017. I have supervised MA theses in Irish.

In spring 2013 I delivered 3 seminars on language to the Department of Old and Medieval Irish.

I also contribute to language-related programmes outside my own school, particularly those run byt e School of Modern Languages and Literatures.

In the period 2009-2013 I taught linguistics modules in the MA programme in Applied Linguistics (AL 6012), and supervised MA theses.  I taught in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences (SL 1001).

I am currently on the Board of  the MA in Translation Studies, and of the BA in World Languages.
