Bhí sé ina bhall de Bhord na Gaeilge, de Bhord na Leabhar Gaeilge, ina eagarthóir Gaeilge ar Books Ireland, ar Anois, ar An Léitheoir, de Choiste Chló Ollscoile Chorcaí, agus is ball de Idirmhalartán Litríocht Éireann é faoi láthair. Chaith tréimhsí ina scrúdaitheoir seachtrach ar an Nua-Ghaeilge i gColáiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh, in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, agus tréimhsí ócáidiúla in Ollscoil na Ríona, Ollscoil Uladh, Coláiste na Tríonóide, Coláiste San Aingeal agus in Sabhal Mòr Ostaig na hAlban. B'é a cheap, a dhréachtaigh is a bhunaigh an chéad chéim i Staidéar an Aistriúcháin in Éirinn i gcomhar le Scoil na dTeangacha Feidhmeacha in DCU. Bhí dlúthpháirteach, leis, i gceardlanna éagsúla scríbhneoireachta faoi scáth na Comhairle Ealaíona agus foilsitheoirí na Gaeilge.

Research Interests


My research has been largely in the field of modern Irish literature with an emphasis on the twentieth century and on contemporary writing. I deal particularly with the novel, the short story, the drama and the narrative poem. I have also written widely on Anglo-Irish and on Scottish Gaelic writing. Some of my research energy goes into creative writing, as this is equally a form of research as the more accepted annotated kind footnoted to the end of its quarry. I do not, however, confine myself to these areas, but have ventured across borders into social affairs, politics and philosophy. The arts are all linked together in a great rosary chain, and what does he know of one subject which only one subject he knows? Research is an open activity and should take you anywhere. I try to let it do this.

Other Activities

 Description

I have been a regular contributor to radio and television programmes for RTÉ, BBC and other broadcasters. Those programmes in which I have participated include Folio, Cúrsaí, Cúrsaí Ealaíne, The Books Programme, Undercover, The Arts Show, Imprint and Off the Shelf.

I have written scripts for film such as Liam Ó Flaithearta: 'ropaire scríbhneora' (Telegael) and Máirtín Ó Cadhain: Rí an Fhocail (Telegael/RTÉ), and I advised on and participated in Synge agus an Domhan Thiar (Telegael/RTÉ/TG4).

In addition, I have recorded readings of my own stories and of the work of others for broadcast and electronic media publication. This work includes Fabhalscéalta (Indreabhán, 1994), Blaiseadh (Indreabhán, 1995), narration on Ciste Cúrsaí Reatha (Baile Átha Cliath, 1994), presentation, editing and recording of the educational pack 'Bhfuil tú ag éisteacht? (Baile Átha Cliath, 1995).

I presented the educational programme File is Fáidh on RTÉ radio between 1994-96. In 1994 I devised the books programme Leabhragán and went on to present it from 1994-96.

I have presented the RTÉ Irish literary programme Scríbhneoirí faoi Chaibidil since 2005.


Teaching Interests

I am primarily interested in the teaching of modern Irish literature, particulary of the twentieth century. I have also, however, taught nearly all aspects of Irish literature and culture, including folklore, biography, drama, film, lexicography, Scottish Gaelic literature, bardic poetry and translation studies, a course which I pioneered and developed and taught in Dublin City University at postgraduate level. I am have also conducted workshops in creative writing which is a different kind of teaching, but also rewarding. I have also developed courses for American and for Erasmus students in the general area of Irish studies, and these have been very succesful. I have given a wide range of public lectures both for general and for specialised audiences, all of them by invitation, with only a handful of exceptions. In my initial course as a primary school teacher, I was awarded the gold medal for first place in teaching, and I received the inaugural award for excellence in lecturing in St Patrick's College, Dublin City University. I have taught and supervised teachers at primary, and at secondary level, and mentored third level lecturers. I have developed a style of teaching for some courses which is based on story telling and ignores technology.
