Research Profile

Eleanor Bantry White

Biography

I am a social science and social work researcher who collaborates across disciplines on projects relating to ageing and wellbeing throughout the life course.  My current work focuses on technology and arts-mediated intervention.  Along with colleagues from computer science, we are seeking to establish new ways of identifying loneliness through passive sensing with the aim of identifying new opportunities for intervention.  This thematic work includes a new IRC-funded participatory project, SMILE, in collaboration with ALONE. Representing methodological diversity, a recent project, AgeACTED, challenged ageism through participatory ethnodrama.  I am also a partner on AliVe, recently funded under Erasmus+, which will use participatory methodologies to identify and address barriers to age-inclusive lifelong learning.  I have an interest in participatory research and am a member of the management committee of Action CA22167 - COST Participatory Approaches with Older Adults. I contribute to research for policy initiatives at the What Works Centre for Wellbeing, London.
I am programme director of the Master of Social Work and Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work Studies and also supervise doctoral research at the School of Applied Social Studies and the  Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies. In August 2023, I was appointed Professor of Social Work at UCC and I look forward to working with my brilliant colleagues at UCC to further strengthen the contribution social work makes to scholarship and society.
I completed a BSocSc and MSW at UCC, a MPhil and DPhil at the University of Oxford and have worked in social work in the health services.
