Research Interests

My research interests reside in the areas of fundamental movement skill development (FMS) across the lifespan including  autistic spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities.  I am co-supervising PhDs, examining perceived barriers for physical educators to the delivery of adapted physical activity to students with disabilities and development of an Holistic Playspace for School Aged Children.  I have supervised Masters in Education addressing interventions for children with dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome, Developmental Co-ordination Disorder and Relationship between Academic & Sports performance of secondary school students.

I am committed to the ongoing development of significant resources for schools and community to develop and deliver quality FMS/APA programmes for both school aged children/teenagers and also for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. University-School -Community collaboration is a key theme of my work hence all research initiatives are  actively supported by The Community Development Project in Gurranabrathar and Health Action Zone, Cork.

I am actively involved in promoting Health related Physical Activity research across the lifespan. Current research is in the area of Physical Activity, Health and Ageing from both theoretical and practical perspectives  in collaboration with the Health Action Zone (HSE, Cork) and Farranree Day Care Centre, Cork .

I have completed  a Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education examining reflective practice in Physical Education (2011).  I am continuing this research particularly addressing supervisor training and development of Communities of Practice in Reflective Practice across a range of Sport Studies and Physical Education settings.

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests lie in the development of fundamental movement skills, health across the lifespan, understanding of adapted physical activity and sports medicine.  I am committed to the scholarship of teaching and learning across the discipline of sport studies and physical education.  I embrace creativity among my students and promote the integration of theory and practice in many innovative ways i.e. running practical workshops, creation of resources and development of inquiry portfolios.  I am keen for my students to embrace different approaches to both teaching and learning.  To this end I have completed the Post Graduate  Certificate, Diploma and Masters in Teaching and Learning with particular interest in the area of reflective practice.  I actively seek to collaborate with outside agencies and organisations promoting university-school community links with emphasis in promoting quality physical activity across the lifespan.
