Research Interests

For the past thirty years, I have lectured in the School of English at University College Cork.  My publications are in the area of modern Irish fiction and drama and my focus has been on literary criticism, biography and on cultural history. I have published three monographs, a memoir, three novels and eleven edited volumes, as well as numerous peer-reviewed essays and book chapters on Irish writers.  I am also interested in the interconnections between politics, literature and the representations of sexuality. Since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland in 1993, lesbian and gay studies has emerged as an exciting and innovative field in contemporary Irish Studies and I have been to the fore in my publications, for example in The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing, Volume 4, my edited essay collection, Sex, Nation and Dissent, my biography on the Irish novelist, Kate O’Brien and my book on Wilde and Ireland, Oscar’s Shadow: Wilde, Homosexuality and Modern Ireland ( 2011)  My edited collection of the writings of Jane and William Wilde was published in 2020 and my biography of Jane Wilde in 2023. With Eleanor Fitzsimons, I will be co-editing an edition of Speranza's poetry in 2024.

With my colleagues in UCC,  we developed a wide range of under-graduate and post-graduate courses in Creative Writing. As part of my responsibilities as Director, I devise and teach creative writing workshops connected to my own publications in fiction, memoir and biography and I am centrally involved in recruiting for the programmes,  Being Director of Creative Writing has extended my own teaching range and expertise and my experience of administration and teamwork. I was a key figure when designing our doctoral programme in UCC and currently I supervise four doctoral students in the areas of short fiction and the historical novel, with IRC funding awarded to three of our five current PhD candidates. I also supervise MA theses on fiction and memoir.

In my own writing  Cissie’s Abattoir (2009) was a new departure for me, part family history, and part personal memory and drawn from extensive research. Widely reviewed and well-received,  it was broadcast on RTE Radio 1 as Book On One in 2010 and I have been invited to the Dublin Book Festival, the Ennis Book Club Festival and many other literary events to take part in creative writing workshops. In September 2011, The Arts Council of Ireland awarded me a Literature Bursary to complete my first novel, The Diary of Mary Travers , which was published in  2014, and then reprinted in 2015  .My study of Colm Toibin, A Different Story was published in September 2013 and my novel on  Elizabeth Bowen, researched during my fellowship at the Harry Ransom center in Austin Texas and written when I was writer in residence at the Center Cultural Irlandais was  published in 2020. I was then a fellow at the Cite des Arts International in Paris in 2019.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

In terms of teaching, I have wide experience of designing and presenting undergraduate courses. My experience ranges from large lectures halls to small group seminars and the student profile within these various lectures and seminars includes Junior Year Abroad and EU students, as well as Evening Arts students. I have had the opportunity to devise and present a wide range of literature courses including a first year nineteenth–century fiction course, second year modules on Shakespeare Studies, Early Anglo-Irish literature and my third year modules on the modern Irish novel and on contemporary Irish drama. My innovative first year fiction course won a UCC President’s Teaching Award for Excellence. In addition I have co-ordinated and devised new post-graduate programmes on Irish Writing and I am part of a committee within the School of English developing a new inter-disciplinary MA programme in Irish Studies within the faculty of arts in UCC. I have developed a one-year MA programme with colleagues in the School of English on Gender and Sexuality in Irish Writing and another MA programme on Irish Writing and Film: Theories and Traditions.  As director of the International Summer School in Irish Studies  I re-designed the lecture and seminar schedule with Dr Damien Bracken of the History Department, as a result, we attracted a wide range of US and EU students and increased .student numbers and the revenues of the  summer school.  Over the years, I have supervised a wide range of MA and doctoral theses on Irish drama, poetry and fiction. and I have formulated a post graduate workshop in memoir and life writing for the MA in Creative Writing.
