Laura Rascaroli completed a Laurea in Modern Letters at the Universita' Cattolica of Milan in 1992, specialising in Social Communications and with a Film Studies dissertation. She was awarded a Higher Doctorate by the NUI in 2014.

She is Professor and Co-Head of the Discipline of Film and Screen Media at University College Cork, where she lectures on European and world cinema and on film theory on the BA in Film and Screen Media, the MA in Film Studies, the MA in Women's Studies, and degrees of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. She has a substantial track record of scholarly publications, successful grant applications, collaborative research, project management, and conference organisation.

Her research interests span art film, modernism and postmodernism, film theory, spatiality and geopolitics, nonfiction, the essay film, autobiographical and first-person cinema. She has an enduring interest in broad theoretical questions including realism and representation, subjectivity and first-person expression in film, and communicative negotiation. Her work has a (not exclusive) focus on European cinema, also in relation to issues of social, political, intellectual and artistic European history. She has authored or coauthored five research monographs and three edited collections, and over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Her work has been translated into languages including Chinese, Italian, French, Polish, Spanish, German and Farsi.


She has extensive external examining experience at both undergraduate programme level and in PhD examinations. She has served on national and international advisory boards, expert panels, selection committees and professional bodies. She is currently Vice-Chair of the ECREA Film Studies Section. She is a reviewer for many international journals and publishers, currently a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies, [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film and Moving Image Studies, and the International Journal of Film and Media Arts; and of the advisory boards of Screen, Comunicazioni Sociali, Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image, L'Avventura: International Journal of Italian Film and Media Landscapes and Studies in Arts and Humanities. She is a co-founder and General Editor of Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media and is Deputy Editor of Studies in Documentary Film.
