Fiona Buckley is a lecturer in the Department of Government and Politics, University College Cork (UCC) specialising in gender politics. Fiona is a graduate of Queen's University Belfast (QUB), being conferred with a Phd in Political Science in 2016.  Her undergraduate and masters studies were undertaken in UCC where she was conferred with a BComm and MSc by research in Government.  She also holds a postgraduate diploma in teaching and learning from UCC.

Fiona's research is largely focused on gender politics, in particular gender and cabinet government and gender quotas, but she has also published on Irish politics, electoral administration and voting behaviour.  

Fiona's work has been published in a number of leading political science journals, including PS: Political Science & Politics, Politics, European Political Science, Representation, Irish Political Studies and the Journal of Women, Politics and Policy. 

Fiona was guest editor of the Irish Political Studies' 2013 special issue 'Politics and Gender on the Island of Ireland: The Quest for Political Agency' with Prof. Yvonne Galligan (QUB).  This journal special issue was published by Routledge in edited book format in July 2014 entitled Politics and Gender in Ireland: The Quest for Political Agency.  She was also guest editor with Dr. Theresa Reidy (UCC) of the 2015 Irish Political Studies' special issue 'Managing the Electoral Process: Insights from, and for, Ireland'. This was published in edited book format by Routledge in 2016.  A third book (edited with Edel Clancy, Dr. Colette Finn and Dr. Margaret O'Keeffe) was published in 2012 and tracked The Road to 5050: Gender Quotas for Ireland.

Fiona's other publications include chapters on women's electoral performance in recent Irish general elections in various volumes of How Ireland Voted, as well as publications examining pedagogical issues in political science. She is Book Review editor with Irish Political Studies and European Political Science (starting February 2018).

Fiona's work has been cited in parliamentary debates in Ireland and Canada. She has appeared before parliamentary committees in hearings on the electoral system and women in politics; addressed meetings of parties, both at parliamentary and national conference level; and acted as State expert witness in the January 2016 High Court constitutional challenge to gender quotas.

Fiona is a recipient of Irish Research Council New Foundations and Erasmus funding. She has been a visiting lecturer in The College of Saint Rose, Albany, New York, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Madrid and Xavier University, Cincinnati. She has also received European Union grants for training and research activities at the University of Edinburgh. She is involved in a number of international collaborative projects including being a member of the Irish team for the Electoral Integrity Project (EIP). In 2018, Fiona will be an EIP Visiting Research Fellow in the University of Sydney.

In 2010, Fiona was awarded the PSAI's Teaching and Learning Award for excellence in teaching.  Fiona teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is interested in supervising Masters and PhD students in Gender politics; Irish politics; candidate emergence, recruitment and selection; gender and elections; gender quotas; executives, cabinet government and gender; gendered institutions; and electoral administration, management and integrity.

 

Research Interests

Fiona's areas of research interest are women in politics, the politics of the Republic of Ireland and the scholarship of teaching and learning. 

In her gender politics research, Fiona uses the concept of gender power to examine the role of women in politics, in particular women in executive leadership. She also researches the adoption and implementation of gender quotas in Irish elections. 

Within her research on Irish politics, much of this work is concentrated in the area of voting behaviour, ballot paper design and electoral reform. 

Within the field of teaching and learning, Fiona has published research on the use of Information Technology in the teaching of political science.  She has also examined the use of work placement in the teaching and learning of political science. 

Fiona has has been successful in securing research funding to pursue her research interests, particularly in the area of teaching and learning.  She has received funding from the Irish Research Council, the National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL) and the European Commission's Leonardo DaVinci and Erasmus funds.

Fiona Buckley is a founding member of The 5050 Group which was established following a UCC conference which Fiona co-organised with Dr. Sandra McAvoy (Women's Studies, UCC) in September 2010.  The 5050 Group is a single issue national group highlighting the under-representation of women in Irish politics.

Teaching Interests

Fiona is keen to supervise PhD students in the following areas (broadly defined): Gender politics; candidate emergence, recruitment and selection; gender and elections; gender quotas; executives, cabinet government and gender; gendered institutions; Irish politics, and electoral administration, management and integrity.
