I am a lecturer in international development at University College Cork (Dept Food Business and Development), and the Director of the BSc. Programme in International Development and Food Policy.

Between 1998 and 2006 I worked in southern Africa working with a rural NGO and later as Senior Lecturer in Land and Agrarian Studies at the University of the Western Cape. In 2009-10 I served as Doctoral Programme Officer with the Trinity International Development Initiative (TIDI) and Coordinator of the International Doctoral School in Global Health at the Centre for Global Health, Trinity College Dublin.

My current research focuses on links between small-scale farming and nutrition, particularly in Ethiopia.

I have published widely on land reform, rural livelihoods and natural resources in Africa.

Research Interests

My current research is focused on the AgriDiet project (see

http://agridiet.ucc.ie/)

AgriDiet is a three-year joint research project between UCC, University College Dublin, the Ethiopian Development Research Institute, Haramaya and Mekelle Universities in Ethiopia, Sokoine and St Augustine’s Universities in Tanzania and the Institute of Development Studies in the UK. The project is funded by Irish Aid under a programme of strategic cooperation with the Higher Education Authority and Irish universities, and runs from October 2012 to September 2015. The overall objective of AgriDiet is to improve understanding of the linkages between agriculture and nutrition in low-income countries, specifically Ethiopia and Tanzania, and more specifically:

1.     To critically assess how agricultural policies and practices in Ethiopia and Tanzania address nutritional goals, especially for women and children.

2.     To identify the social, economic and environmental factors influencing local agricultural practices in four selected sites of Ethiopia and Tanzania, and the implications for nutritional status of members of rural households

3.     To facilitate the creation of a network of stakeholders to address nutrition issues in Ethiopia and Tanzania

4.     To build the capacity of stakeholders to mobilise knowledge, promote participation and increase the evidence base for informed policymaking and practice in the area of agriculture-nutrition linkages.

AgriDiet is organised into eight work packages involving integrated research studies, stakeholder meetings and communication activities. A key feature is the recruitment of six PhD students from  the academic staff in our African partner universities, three of whom are registered at UCC and three at UCD.

My other areas of research interest include: Land tenure, Land reform, Sub-Sahran Africa, Rural development, Smal-scale agriculture, Food, hunger and nutrition, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Irish aid policy
