Dr. Mary O’Shaughnessy is a lecturer with the Department of Food Business and Development at University College Cork. Her research interests include Rural Development, Co-operative and Social enterprises. She is a qualified teacher, holds an MSc in Rural Development and was awarded a PhD on the topic of Survival Strategies and Rural Based Social Enterprises in 2007. 


She sits on the advisory board of the National Rural Network (www.nrn.ie), and is a member of a National Working/Policy Advisory committee on Future Farm Diversification Policy (post-2013). 

She was re-appointed for a second term to the board of the EMES University Based International Research Network on social enterprises (www.emes.net) in 2015 and was appointed a director of MicroFinance Ireland in September 2015.  She is an academic board member of the NUI BSc Rural Development by Distance Learning since 1996 and a committee member of the Annual Irish Rural Studies Symposium.


Her research portfolio includes: peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, published conference proceedings as well as working papers and commissioned National and EU policy evaluations/ reports. Research Interests

Her research interests include rural development, co-operative and social enterprises. She was awarded her PhD from the NUI on the topic of the Survival Strategies of Rural Based Social Enterprises in 2007 and published one journal article, one sole author book chapter and two monographs from her PhD thesis.  Two of her research papers, O’ Shaughnessy, M. and O’ Hara, Patricia, (2015) “WISE: The Dominant Irish Social Enterprise Model” and  O’ Shaughnessy, M. (2015) “Social Enterprises in Rural Communities ­ An Irish Case Study”, Paper presented at the EMES International Research Conference on Social Enterprises, Helsinki, Finland 29th June - 3rd July, 2015, were chosen for the 2015 EMES Conference Selected Paper Series (ECSP).     

In 2016 Dr. O' Shaughnessy was appointed country moderator by DG EMPL to complete a mapping study of social enterprises which was presented at the European Commission DG EMPLY in June 2016.  She is currently the PI on two Marie Curie Research Projects on the topic of Co-operative and Sustainable Rural Development and Rural Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation.  Mary works closely with Industry representatives of cooperative and sustainable rural development.  This includes teaching/research at the University of Almeria (South-East Spain) and COEXPHAL, an association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of Almería (Southeast Spain). It was created in 1977 as an association of 17 cooperatives to provide common services and to obtain much needed market power and recognition. Currently, it includes over 100 cooperatives, the majority of the members being small holding agricultural cooperatives who jointly market their product.  She also works closely with Ballyhoura Development Ltd, a successful Irish based local rural development company which contributes significantly to the suitable rural economic and social development of 54 local rural communities in Munster.

Teaching Interests

Mary holds a 1H qualification in teaching from the Department of Education at UCC. She has experience at post post-primary and third level and extensive experience of working with adult learners.In her current position she teaches a variety of students including undergraduate (CAO entry), post-graduate, and mature students. Her teaching methodologies include face-to-face lectures, on-line blended and e-learning methodologies, UCC community TV, interactive CD roms, voice-over power point slides, Distance Learning Manuals and the use of off-campus community/practitioner based seminars.  Dr. O' Shaughnessy is the academic director of the NUI BSc and Diploma in Rural Development by Distance Learning Degree since 1996 (the first inter-university NUI programme in rural development). She is also an appointed faculty member of the EMES International PhD Summer School .
