Dr. Nora McCarthy is employed as Lecturer in Medical Education, UCC since 2010. She is academic coordinator of a 3 term module for first year graduate entry UCC medical students, GM1010 coordinator Integrated Patient-centred Clinical Science and Practice, with the associated blueprinting and delivery of assessment methods, including OSCEs, MCQ/MEQs/SBA. Dr McCarthy is joint Academic and Assessment Co-coordinator at Mercy University Hospital clinical site. The completion of a Masters in Maritime Medicine complimented the development and delivery of a novel curriculum for medical students in maritime medicine, including the development and application of novel assessment techniques for medical students in this field. She is lead of a work package in the recently awarded FP7 proposal S-HELP (Securing Health Emergency Learning Planning), an international consortium aimed at developing a new standard in crisis management. This work package will involve the design, delivery and evaluation of training modules using virtual and role-based simulation and appropriate assessment methods. Dr. McCarthy with nursing colleagues implemented Early Warning Score training into medical and nursing education programmes in UCC with innovative inter-disciplinary assessment which was recognised by a a President’s Award for Research into Innovative Forms of Teaching.
Dr. McCarthy leads the co-ordination of student exchange programmes in UCC School of Medicine. A particular interest of hers is in the experiences of overseas medical students, in particular those from non-western backgrounds.
