My original nursing background is in Cardiothoracic nursing and Intensive/Critical Care nursing and I have worked clinically in Guys Hospital London and in Cork University Hospital.

I became interested in maintaining good quality of care through the formulation of effective nursing Policies & Guidelines, with this becoming the subject of my Masters thesis and subsequent publication.

As a nurse educator I was interested in exploring various pedagogical approaches and was a founding member of a very successful research team in the School of Nursing & Midwifery. The Problem Based Learning and Simulation Research Group has won a number of awards and have published and presented nationally and internationally (See Publications section). I chose to step down from this group so as to pursue my individual research and my doctoral studies.

I was successful in gaining funding from the Irish Heart Foundation to carry out research in relation to Cardiac Patients and their Quality of Life. This ongoing research project uncovered stark inequalities in health and in access to health care between patients from different socioeconomic groups, with a significant factor being the possession of private health insurance. This prompted me to examine the realm of Health Inequalities as they pertain to Ireland's health system (See Research Section) and, thus, this was the subject of my PhD thesis.

I enrolled as a PhD candidate for the PhD Social Sciences (GREP) programme here in UCC 2010. My thesis investigated the persistence of an inequitable health care system in Ireland using a genealogical approach. I used a historical sociological approach, and four specific genealogies, to understand the multiple origins of our health care system that have become shaped over time through formal and informal discourses. I submitted my thesis in March 2014, successfully defended my thesis in June 2014 and was conferred in February 2015.

With a Social Sciences knowledge and my Health Sciences experience, I am now in a unique position to bridge both fields and engage in interdisciplinary research activities. I am engaged in interdisciplinary activity with colleagues in the School of Applied Social Studies in relation to the development of cultural competency among health and social care students.

I am currently working on a book on Irish health care based on my thesis with additional contemporary genealogies.

Research Interests

Health Inequalities
I completed my PhD Social Sciences in UCC, jointly provided by the Schools of Sociology, Applied Social Studies and Government beginning in 2010, submitted and defended in 2014. The thesis was titled: "Health Care and Neoliberalism in Ireland: Withholding the Gift and Corrupting the Social Contract". My thesis used a historical genealogical approach to investigate the persistence of an unequal health care system in Ireland. https://cora.ucc.ie/handle/10468/1994 

I have continued to have an interest in research surrounding health inequalities, and in particular, the means by which nursing students can be adequately prepared to understand such inequalities, and to be proactive in addressing and tackling them. To this end a collaborative research project is underway with Canadian Educators in UBC. A research visit to UBC is currently being planned for Spring 2017.

Promoting Intercultural Communication and Diversity in Teaching and Work Practice (April 2014)

This seminar explored the benefits of intercultural training and how this can enhance and build on staff and students’ working relationships through developing new areas of training within teaching and practice settings. It aimed to provide essential learning points and interactive resources to enable participants to work competently in intercultural settings. The primary aim of the seminar was to respond to the growing need of students and staff in developing their knowledge and capacity to appropriately deal with and accommodate diversity in their practice settings. The seminar also aimed to equip participants with knowledge and understanding to help contribute to better practice in intercultural relations both in teaching and practice settings. It provided participants a participants to examine personal and professional values, attitudes and behavioural practices in relation to diversity, difference and equality.

This collaborative initiative between Doras Luimni, The School of Applied Social Studies and The School of Nursing and Midwifery will be part of an on-going initiative with the aim of developing modules both at undergraduate and post graduate level.
