Professor Hegarty trained as a general nurse in Cork University Hospital and attained her MSc in nurse education and PhD in physiology in University College Cork. She has worked in as a general nurse in: Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, Co Meath; the Middlesex Hospital, Mortimer Street, London, and Cork University Hospital. Thereafter she worked as a nurse tutor within the Nurse Education Centre, Bon Secours Hospital, Cork and laterally as a lecturer and researcher Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, University College Cork.  She currently holds the post of Professor of Nursing and is the Director of Graduate Education within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Professor Hegarty was a member of the National Review of Undergraduate Nursing and Midwifery Degree Programmes which reported in December 2012. She is one of the founding members and current Chairwomen of the Irish Council of Professors, Deans and Heads of Nursing and Midwifery.

She leads the cancer research strand within the school. Her research interests pertain to the experience of cancer and the mechanisms by which this experience can be optimised. Josephine has been a Cochrane Research Fellow. She supervises many PhD and MSc students for their research dissertations. Josephine has published extensively in the international literature.

Research Interests

The Cancer Research Group has focused their research on  

Aim of research group: to explore the health and life experiences of individuals, their families and carers during the cancer trajectory and identify means of optimising the survivorship experience.

Objectives:

• To explore the on-going physical, psychological, social, spiritual and economic issues facing individuals with cancer and their families.
• Identify appropriate mechanisms and resources for the on-going support of people living with, through and beyond cancer. 

Key concepts: Survivorship, symptom management, self-management, help seeking, cancer prevention, patient/family centred care.
