Dr McCarthy works as a Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC.  She is the Programme Lead for the MSc Nursing Studies and the MSc Nursing and Healthcare Quality Improvement.  Dr Mc Carthy teaches on research, health promotion and professional conduct in addition to other areas of health.
  
Dr Mc Carthy has a vast research experience.  She has managed/coordinated a number of research studies with varying study designs (cross-sectional, case-control and RCT) and is currently a Co-PI for TRUST which is a randomised placebo-controlled trial.  TRUST is recruiting people aged 65 years and over with a mildly underactive thyroid gland.  Work for this study is being carried out in four European countries (The Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland and Ireland).  The Irish TRUST site is in Cork with data collection taking place in the Clinical Research Facility, Mercy University Hospital, Cork, in addition to satellite sites such as University Hospital Waterford, Kerry General Hospital and Bantry General Hospital.   

Dr McCarthy’s research interests lie in occupational health, specifically that of older workers.  Her PhD investigated the physical and psychosocial factors of health for older workers.  Dr Mc Carthy's research work includes topics such as healthy ageing and chronic illness (disability and cardiovascular disease) in addition to lifestyle behaviours.  She has presented at numerous national and international conferences on her work and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Research Interests

Work life has become the focus of many researchers in recent years. As work consumes on average 40% of our week it plays a major role in our physical, mental and psychological health. Research has focused on the physical injuries resulting from some occupations such as musculoskeletal injuries, back pain and also psychosocial factors, looking particularly at occupational stress.

The Irish economy has evolved significantly in the last ten to fifteen years. The Celtic Tiger, the term used for the economic boost, begun in the 1990s, but has seen a slow down turn in the last five years. The economic expansion brought about a change to the work life of Irish people.

I am presently working on a large cross-sectional study looking at heart disease and diabetes. The area of cardiovascular health and job strain has been well researched but not in an ageing population working in Ireland. This will allow me to explore heart disease and the ageing worker in Ireland.
