Aine Mairead Horgan

Aine is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. She holds a Bachelors degree from Trinity College Dublin and a MSc and PhD from University College Cork. Prior to beginning work in academia in 2004 she worked in both the private and public health sectors as a mental health nurse.  Aine leads the mental health nursing programme within the School of Nursing and Midwifery. She is Chair of Student Experience and the Student Mental Health Resource Officer within the School, and a co-convenor of the mental health and wellbeing action group within the University. Aine's research interests focus on young people's mental health. With a specific interest in positive mental health, depression, peer support and e-health. She is also interested in participatory models of research and working in partnership with mental health service users in the research process. Aine is currently the chair of ENGAGE an Interdisciplinary Clinical Mental Health Research Network at UCC.

Research Interests

Áine's research interests focus on young people's mental health, with a specific interest in positive mental health, depression, peer support and e-health. She has experience of mixed methodologies including online intervention design and has published extensively on the mental health of University students. Her most recent research focusses on mental wellbeing, depression, suicidal ideation and help seeking behaviour in University students. She is currently leading a work package on a European funded project to co-produce an educational intervention with mental health service users for student nurses. This project involves working in partnership with mental health service users throughout the research process (grant application - data collection - data analysis - intervention design). She is also currently working on a HSE funded project on the clinical leadership needs of nurses and midwives in Ireland. In addition, Aine is involved in a study of the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with Cystic Fibrosis and is a collaborator on the eMentH project, a multi-centre project on mental health and the internet. Aine is chair of ENGAGE an Interdisciplinary Clinical Mental Health Research Network. The network aims to promote, generate and disseminate high quality collaborative research to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of people across the lifespan. It is a collaborative venture between the Health Service in Ireland, voluntary sector and UCC that brings together clinicians, service users, carers and researchers from across the Southern region. Aine is also a member of the ISS21 Children and Youth Research Cluster at UCC.

Outreach Activities

 Description

Aine has delivered a number of seminars to parents on teenage mental health throughout the Southern region

Aine works with Aware, a voluntary organisation supporting people with depression and bipolar disorder, as an online support group facilitator

As part of her research Aine developed a website called Lose the Blues for students at University College Cork. The website offered information on depression and related difficulties, links to support services and a forum to allow its members to share their experiences of low mood. The website had 126 members over the course of two academic terms. Aine monitored the website to ensure the safety of its members. Due to lack of funding the website is now closed, however it is hoped it will become live again in the future.
