Biography

I was awarded a Bachelor Degree in Nursing Studies (BNS) at University College Dublin (1993). a Masters Degree in Education at University College Cork (1996), and a PhD Degree at the University of Manchester, UK (2004). Prior to pursuing an academic career, I practiced clinical nursing in Ireland and in the UK, specialising in children's nursing.

I was appointed as Associate Professor at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork in 2008. I am actively involved in teaching and research with a special interest in children's nursing and health care and chronic illness management. In 2009, I spent a period of 6 months at Yale School of Nursing, New Haven CT, working with Professor Margaret Grey on research into childhood diabetes. I supervise MSc and PhD research students.

Research Interests

My research interest is primarily on chronic illness management with a special interest in children and adolescents.

I lead a programme of research within the School of Nursing & Midwifery titled Chronic Illness Management in Children, Adolescents & Adults. The mission of this programme is to conduct national and international collaborative research toward (i) helping children, adolescents and adults manage the complexities of chronic illness in their daily lives, (ii) developing services that enhance health care provision in the management of chronic illnesses, (iii) providing a forum for children, adolescents and adults to articulate their views and to `voice' how best their health care needs can be met. In addition to conducting studies on the management of chronic illness within this programme, research specific to risk and preventative aspects of chronic illness will also be conducted.

Specific areas of interest within this programme are: self-and family management, self-monitoring, symptom experiences and management, palliative care and quality of life experiences. Studies are currently being conducted across a range of chronic illnesses including asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, childhood leukaemia, inflammatory bowel disease and colo-rectal cancer, COPD and cardiac failure.

I supervise Masters research students and PhD students undertaking studies within the programme of research on chronic illness.
