Moira is a College Lecturer in mental health nursing in the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing & Midwifery, University College Cork, Ireland. She  is  currently a Doctoral Student at University College Cork and focusing on the experience of hope in families.  

Prior to this she worked in a variety of clinical posts in Ireland, England and Australia. She developed the interdisciplinary Postgraduate Certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Postgraduate Diploma/MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy. She was Programme Co-ordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Recovery Focused Mental Health Nursing for a number of years. 

Her teaching and research interests include recovery, working with families, communication skills, young people’s mental health, and nurse education. She has published in the areas of  hope, reflection, communication skills and post registration nursing and midwifery education.

She is a member of Care Alliance Ireland’s Family Carer Research Group, the Executive Board of the Irish Institute of Mental Health Nursing, Mental Health Reform’s Children’s Mental Health Coalition and the

Regional Working Group: Implementation of a Vision for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.

 She is also involved with an Advancing Recovery Ireland clinical site.

 

 

Research Interests

My research interests include  mental health recovery, families and service user experiences and  nurse education . I am  undertaking a Doctorate in Nursing and my research is focused on the experience of hope in the context of families when a member experiences mental health distress. I have experience in qualitative research methodologies, methods and issues.

I was a member of the group which undertook the Health Service Executive Literature Review of Post Registration Nursing and Midwifery Education which informed the national report:  National Report of the Post Registration Nursing and Midwifery Education Review Group.

My MSc  explored the  clinical experience of reflection in student mental health nurses.

I am currently involved  in an European Erasmus funded project to co-produce an educational intervention with mental health service users for student nurses. I am a member of Care Alliance Ireland’s Family Carer Research Group.
