Dr. Nicola Cornally is currently a Clinical Researcher with the Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation, University College Cork and Lecturer Practitioner at the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork. Her role includes the coordination of a study on the ‘Systematic Implementation of Advance Directives in Irish Long-term care settings’, a feasibility study in 3 sites, using the ‘LetMeDecide’ programme. This before/after study is funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation (2012-2014). Following on from this work she is Co-PI on a recently funded HRB RCT project exploring the effect of implementing ACDs in Long Term Care (2015-2018).

She is a Registered General Nurse with clinical nursing experience in general medicine and care of the older adult. Nicola has also worked in a senior clinical position in practice development. She holds an MSc in Nursing, a BSc in Nursing Studies, a Diploma in Nursing Science and Professional Certificates in both Nursing Management and Teaching in Higher Education.  For her PhD, Nicola studied help-seeking behavior for chronic pain with a particular emphasis on behavioral theory. Her research interests include; Health behaviour (including healthcare decision making), pain management in older adults, instrument development and healthy ageing. She supervises PhD and MSc students in these areas. 

She led the development of the first online Postgraduate Diploma in Gerontology in Ireland, which commenced in 2013, in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. In conjunction with the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care, she has developed an online course; ‘Introduction to Advance Care Directives’ for open access use. She is an active member of the health ageing cluster within the School of Nursing and Midwifery and is a co-representative for COLLAGE on the A1 action group (Adherence, including user empowerment) with EIP-AHA.
