Ellen joined UCC in 2016 as research assistant within the Coastal and Marine Governance group in MaREI. Ellen has been working on research subjects including maritime spatial planning, aquaculture and climate change adaptation.  

Previous to joining UCC, Ellen worked with The Commissioners of Irish Lights, developing a guide on the General Lighthouse's involvement with maritime spatial planning including issues associated with navigational safety, coastal tourism and aquaculture site planning. As well as this, Ellen also created an Environmental Policy and Procedures document for the organisation.

Ellen has presented on maritime spatial planning and coastal management at numerous conferences.

Previous research includes:

  • Testing how Rossnowlagh Beach (Donegal) has reacted to erosion and how the system has responded to action that has been taken
  • Geographies of cyberspace - utilising social media as an effective form of communication
