Tim O'Higgins

I am a multi-disciplinary scientist working at the interface between environmental science, policy and economics.  My recent research has focused on mapping the social dimensions of marine planning.  Though trained originally as a marine scientist I now work on terrestrial and freshwater as well as marine social-ecological systems.

My current research work, as case study leader for the EU H2020- AQUACROSS focuses on the mapping of economic drivers, agriculture, recreational use, environmental pressures and social consquences of species introductions in Lough Erne,Co.Fermanagh.

Between 2009-2013 as a senior lecturer (above the bar) at SAMS, I coordinated the EU FP7 large scale integrating project KnowSeas which brought together social scientists, economists, anthropologists ecologist and policy people from 33 institutions in 16 EU countries to research the implications of  the Marine Strategy Framework Directive on management of Europe's four regional Seas.  For more details visit the project's legacy website www.msfd,eu.

As an NRC research associate with the US EPA, I was part of the first US federal programme to study ecosystem services.

I have worked as a fisheries observer in the high seas, as a biologist with Dublin City Council, and taken part in oceanographic cruises with the the British Antarctic Survey and National Environmental Research Council

I am particularly interested in science communication and in 2015 I published a popular/text book about environmental management Its not easy being green: A systems Approach to Environmental Management
with Dunedin Academic Press.
