Dr. Orla McGarry is a Post-Doctoral researcher on the YMOBILITY project, a Horizon 2020 research project that examines youth migration and mobility within the EU. In this capacity she contributes to innovative and in-depth analysis of migratory strategies and outcomes for youth migrants as well as investigating the impact of migration processes on the sending and receiving societies. Orla's research interests lie in the areas of youth migration, intercultural and cosmopolitan identity and religious and cultural adaptation. She also has a specific interest in, and expertise on, the development of culturally responsive and age-appropriate participatory research methodologies. She has conducted extensive explorative and evaluative community based research on issues such as intercultural and inter-generational engagement and cross-cultural communication strategies, and has published work on the themes of migration, research positionalities, and intercultural engagement.Orla was previously employed as a Research Associate in the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre, NUI Galway and in the School for Graduate Entry Medicine, UL and as a Post-Doctoral researcher in the Institute for Lifecourse and Society, NUI, Galway. She completed a Ph.D. with the School of Political Science and Sociology, NUI Galway in 2012 and was awarded an M.Phil in Ethnic and Racial Studies by Trinity College, Dublin in 2008.
