While acknowledging the tremendous value of such accounts, it would seem important to also point to the wonderful insights that can be gleaned from other sources, from our literature and our oral traditions for example. This article discusses the well-known song ‘Aonach Bhearna na Gaoithe’ as one such source, one that provides us with a wonderful window on the yearly cycle in the southeast of Ireland in the first half of the 19th century. A brief examination of Tomás Ó Móráin’s (fl c.1820) account of a fair day at Windgap, in the nortwest of the county, reveals much of ethnographic and cultural interest, and it is here argued that such sources could be much more widely utilised for such investigations than has hitherto been the case. - Baile Átha Cliath - uí Ógáin, Ríonach - An Cumann le Béaloideas Éireann - 0332 270X - 81 DA - 2013/09 ER -

ABSTRACT | Summary: It seems ironic that in attempting to assemble a view of 18th and 19th century Ireland, our historians have been largely guilty of ignoring the very voices of those whom they seek to understand, often looking to the accounts of visitors and those who undertook walking tours for information of an ethnographic nature. | ||
