  - This paper will examine further the at once conservative and simultaneously ever-shifting nature of the Irish song tradition through an examination of one of the many compositions of the well-known nineteenth-century poet, Antaine Raiftearaí (1779-1835). His ‘Máire Ní Eidhin’, as found in a number of instances in the Waterford repertoire, is discussed with a view to further highlighting elements of both continuity and change in the context of the transmission of Irish song. Following Ó Laoire and others, it will be here shown that the omissions and additions, so characteristic of oral transmission, far from being seen in any negative light, should rather be viewed as elements essential to the perpetuity of orally transmitted material, in constantly bringing new and relevant meanings to light for both performer and audience alike.
