Biography:

I locate myself within a theoretically informed, socially engaged and policy relevant interpretation of environmental geography. That is, within the long-standing tradition of the discipline concerned with human-nature interactions but now informed by an explicit commitment to sustainability and global social justice.

Currently, my research is focussed upon the geographies of food:

  • Exploring the environmental consequences of our contemporary food system and the kinds of measures that might enable us to achieve greater sustainability in production, distribution and consumption practices.
  • Critically evaluating the contemporary dynamics of the global food system, and the role of neo-liberalism and science in shaping regulatory frameworks and multilevel governance.
  • Contributing to theoretical debate and conceptual refinement around `alternative food geographies', including interrogating notions of quality, trust, risk and responsibility.

I maintain a close interest in other inter-related aspects of our current environmental predicament - eg climate change, coastal systems, peak oil - and the challenges facing societies in coping with vulnerability/enhancing resilience. I am committed to finding ways of strengthening the role of environmental social science in explanation and in contributing to the formulation of strategies for more sustainable levels of development.

I welcome enquiries from prospective students motivated by a desire to undertake postgraduate research in the fields of sustainability, food systems analysis and geographies of consumption.
