I joined UCC in 2008 and am a graduate of Oxford University (MPhil, DPhil) and UCC (BSocSc, MSW, PCTLHE). I worked in medical social work before moving into the university setting. My research interests centre on ageing.  Current projects include a) interventions for social isolation and b) healthy cognitive ageing.  I am also interested in social work practice with older people.  My doctoral research at Oxford focused on supporting people with dementia to walkabout safely outdoors. I coordinate the interdisciplinary ISS21 Ageing Research Cluster http://www.ucc.ie/en/iss21/clusters/ageing and have worked with members of this cluster on a range of projects.I teach at undergraduate and graduate level in the areas of a) research methods, b) social work and c) ageing.

Research Interests

My research interests centre on ageing.  Current projects include a) interventions for social isolation and b) healthy cognitive ageing.  Other recent projects include assessment and interventions to support people with dementia to walkabout safely outdoors; age-related food poverty; professional education in relation to vulnerable adults; and  community development initiatives for rural social isolation. Methodologically, I have experience of both qualitative and quantitative methods including systematic reviews; analysis of large data-sets and administrative records; questionnaires; focus groups and qualitative interviews. I frequently act as a peer reviewer for a range of international journals and sit on the editorial board of Research on Social Work Practice (2014 Ranking: 5/40 in Social Work Journal Citation Reports ®, Thomson Reuters, 2015).
