Dr. Nine received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Arizona and her BA in Philosophy from Carleton College.  Her work focuses on issues in global justice, territory and borders, and the space between those two topics.  Her book, Global Justice and Territory (OUP 2012), won the American Philosophical Association Book Prize in 2013 and the Brian Farrell 2013 Book Prize, awarded by the Political Studies Association of Ireland. 

She also works on related issues such as: 
  • Resource rights, (including water rights),
  • Justice,
  • Legitimate political authority,
  • Immigration theory,
  • Moral responsibility, 
  • The role of moral arbitrariness in political theory,
  • Rights to the home, and 
  • Property rights and common ownership.

Research Interests

Currently I work on theories of:
Global justice,
Territory and borders,
and the space between these two topics.  

I am the Principal Investigator on the IRC grant, 'Territorial Rights over Rivers', during the 2014/2015 academic year.  During this time, my research assistants and I are scoping the topic of territorial rights over rivers and developing a number of outputs, including essays and a semi-annotated bibliography.  Access to these materials will be available here:  http://eis.bris.ac.uk/~plcdib/territory.html
