The primary focus of the Kenny rsearch group is how the in utero environment affects the future health and wellbeing of the infant.

Louise Kenny (MB ChB (hons), PhD, MRCOG) is Professor of Obstetrics at University College Cork and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Louise graduated in Medicine with honours from the University of Liverpool, UK, in 1993. After completing her internship and SHO training in the Mersey region, she moved to Nottingham in 1997 to undertake a research project in the School of Biomedical Sciences. In 1999 she was awarded one of the first MRC/RCOG Clinical Training Fellowships and subsequently completed a PhD investigating abnormal vascular responses in pre-eclampsia. In recognition of this body of work she was awarded the William Blair Bell Lectureship by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2003. In 2001, she was invited to move to the Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre, University of Manchester as a clinical lecturer. She undertook a programme of post-doctoral work at the same time as completing her higher specialist clinical training in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Louise’s post-doctoral work mainly investigated the use of metabolomic technology in the development of a screening test for pre-eclampsia. This work attracted the Society for Gynaecological Investigation President's Award and Plenary Presentation at the annual meeting in Los Angeles, 2005.

In 2006, Louise moved to Ireland to take up key role in the development of the new Anu Research Centre at Cork University Maternity Hospital and continued to develop her research programme in uteroplacental insufficiency, adverse pregnancy outcome and pregnancy loss.

In 2007, Louise was appointed as a Health Research Board Ireland Clinician Scientist. This 4 year award (of €1.6 million) is underpinning the Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE) Study- a prospective longitudinal case cohort of pregnancy outcome which will also contribute to the world's largest global pregnancy biobank (see www.scopestudy.net)

In July 2009, Louise was awarded a prestigious Principal Investigator Programme grant from Science Foundation Ireland to develop predictive metabolomic markers of poor pregnancy outcome. In addition she currently holds grants from The Wellcome Trust, The Children's Medical and Research Foundation, Molecular Medicine Ireland and the Health Research Board of Ireland.

In 2013, Louise

led a successful bid under the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centres call to establish the first perinatal research centre in Ireland, the Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research (INFANT)(www.infantcente.ie).

Louise's work has resulted in >200 peer reviewed original papers, reviews and book chapters. She is the co-Editor of the 19th Edition of `Obstetrics by Ten Teachers'- the world's leading undergraduate textbook in obstetrics and senior Editor of the forthcoming 20th editions of ‘Obstetrics and Gynaecology by Ten Teachers'. In addition, Louise is a reviewer for a wide range of international journals including the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the British Medical Journal, Clinical Chemistry, the European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Journal of Perinatal Medicine and Reproductive Sciences and research funding bodies such as the Medical Research Council (UK), the Wellcome Trust, Action Research, the British Heart Foundation, Wellbeing and Sparks, the Children's Medical Research Charity.

Research Interests

I am the founding Director of INFANT, The Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research (www.infantcentre.ie). INFANT was established in 2013 following a successful bid to the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) 2012 National Research Centre’s call (www.sfi.ie/funding/funding-calls/closed-calls/sfi-research-centres-programme-2012.html). Founded on a decade of world-class collaborative research, INFANT is mainly based at UCC, where it is home to close to 100 researchers with a diverse funding portfolio of over €30 million, working across the entire perinatal space. INFANT is supported by competitively awarded funding from SFI, Enterprise Ireland, EU FP7, Wellcome Trust, Health Research Board and other sources, and from a range of industry partners, including Irish and international SMEs and large multinationals (MNCs), who support the Centre through cash and in-kind commitments. INFANT’s vision is to become the world’s leading perinatal translational Research Centre by 2019.

Research within INFANT is clustered into thematic domains, which largely align with the National Research Prioritisation Exercise. Further details can be found on our websites but in brief the thematic research areas are as follows:

INFANT Biobank

Our biobank is home to >1.5million aliquots of biological samples collected over a decade from a growing number of studies worth a total of >€12million in funding. The biobank is built upon the expertise of database programmers, technicians and curators who have developed SOPs for sample preparation, transport, storage, and access, adhering to the principles of International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories, Molecular Medicine Ireland, and OECD Guidelines. Our protocols are acknowledged internationally as the gold standard. This biobank is the launch pad for our diagnostics projects.

Biomarkers for Screening and Diagnostics

Pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction and spontaneous preterm birth are the major complications of late pregnancy. They are leading causes of illness and death in mothers and newborn babies. Every year, almost €45 billion is spent on healthcare costs related to these diseases globally. Identification of first time mothers at risk for these conditions is the first step to effective intervention and prevention but, currently, there are no screening tests that accurately predict which first time mothers will develop these conditions.  My group was one of the first in the world to exploit the burgeoning science of metabolomics for clinical benefit and the resulting technology, a prototype screening test pre-eclampsia has been licensed to a new startup, Metabolomic Diagnostics. We have partnered with Waters Corporation to develop an early pregnancy predictive screening test for preterm birth.  INFANT’s Strategy is to continue to grow the extensively phenotyped biobank and further our reputation for delivering innovation in this space.

Neonatal Brain Research: Innovative Cotside Monitoring

The ability to predict future outcomes is an elusive goal that would revolutionise healthcare. INFANT aims to improve long-term health outcomes of newborn babies by early and accurate detection of neurological problems such as seizures and other adverse cerebral events encountered in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), using enhanced real-time multi-modality physiological monitoring at the cot-side. We are developing algorithms with field-leading performance, which can remotely monitor this complex data, then accurately predict the onset of adverse events, leading to rapid treatment and improved patient outcomes.

Medical Devices

INFANT will develop cot-side devices that provide clinicians with a continuous assessment of overall brain health in infants. These will incorporate many continuously obtained signals including brain electrical activity, oxygen levels, and BP. These measurements will be integrated using novel algorithms to provide clinicians with an index of infants’ brain health. The ultimate goal is to have this become the standard of care in managing babies in NICUs worldwide. As these research streams progress, opportunities for convergence will emerge.

Connected Health

There is a growing trend for the patient to become a partner in their own healthcare, with remote, at-home and in-the-community monitoring representing a multi-billion dollar market. This emerging field of mHealth is driven by the increasing pressure on clinical services, and is made possible through the emergence of electronic patient records and remote monitoring devices. INFANT has a number of industry projects in Connected Health, and the level of commercial interest reflects the growth of this field with 2 new industry proposals submitted to SFI by INFANT in December 2014, and we are involved in a number of Horizon 2020 consortia preparing bids for 2015.

Maternal and Infant Nutrition

A neglected area in perinatal health is that of personalised nutrition for pregnant women and newborns. This is being addressed by INFANT, and ours will be the first dedicated maternal and infant nutrition research programme in Ireland. It is based on 5 years of planning and foundation research to develop expertise and structural capacity.  Poorly quality in utero and early life nutrition contributes to adverse developmental programming and future poor health and disease. We will develop an international reputation for excellence in nutritional optimisation of the maternal-fetal interface to improve perinatal outcomes for mothers and babies, with long-term benefits to health for current and next generations.  Initiating this strategy, we are about to commence our first nutrition project, which will deliver personalised healthcare programmes for preterm babies. This has been followed by the announcement by SFI and Mead Johnson Nutritional to co-fund a €4.3m project led by INFANT.

Therapeutics

Availability of diagnostic screening tests will provide patients and clinicians with the supporting evidence necessary to decide on treatment options, opening a vast new market for pharmaceutical and other therapeutics companies to pursue opportunities to develop treatments for the targeted diseases. Some are already in place (aspirin for a minority of pre-eclamptic women) and others are in development (we are about to launch an RCT of sildenafil citrate for treatment of fetal growth restriction). Many more are required. INFANT is investigating possible therapies for pre-eclampsia and other placenta-related conditions, such as preterm birth, based on identification of isolated participants in biochemical pathways and enzymatic catalytic reactions in the bloodstream. Similarly, the novel patient monitoring devices we are developing to analyse newborn brain activity will mean pharma companies can develop drugs to respond to observations, and can work with us to monitor the therapeutic performance of drugs. INFANT already has industry partnerships in this space.

Perinatal Clinical Trials

An objective in our Strategic Plan is to be an international Centre for clinical trials. One of the fundamental roadblocks to the translation of innovation for mothers and babies is the intrinsic complexity of conducting randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in these uniquely vulnerable populations.  INFANT has a strong track record in collaborative research and in the conduct of large-scale international multicentre RCTs of diagnostics and interventions in pregnancy and neonates. In addition, we are acknowledged world leaders in longitudinal cohort studies. A key part of our strategy involves establishing an Irish Perinatal Clinical Trial Network. HRB announced the funding of this CTN, with INFANT as co-lead, in December 2014. The Perinatal CTN will facilitate greater national collaboration in perinatal trials, to ensure we maintain our place at the international forefront of this niche area of clinical research. Most crucially of all, this network will enable us to fast-track technologies and interventions developed within INFANT to clinical trials and thus to the bed and cot-side.  This also opens up opportunities for Horizon2020 funding.
