Dr. David J. Otway is in charge of both the 1st and 3rd Year Undergraduate Chemistry delivery. He is a member of the Academic Council (AC) Committee on Information Strategy & Educational Resources, the SEFS representative on the E-learning AC sub-committee and the Income Generation Oversight Group, the Chair of the Chemistry Outreach, Public Relations & Admissions (OPRA) Committee, the Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) coordinator, the co-designer of the UCC chemistry website, a UCC representative in the Republic of Ireland Section of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a member of the teaching and examinations committee, a staff representative on the Student Chemical Society at UCC, a member of the Staff/Student Committee, a member of the Organization Teams for the 68th & 60th Irish Universities Chemistry Colloquia, and coordinator of a number chemistry modules (CM1200, CM1201, CM2201, CM1003, CM1005, CM1006, CM1007, CM2001, CM3028, CM4018). 

Dr. Otway obtained his BSc, PhD, ARCS, and DIC from Imperial College. He has held research posts at Georgia Tech., Atlanta, USA with Prof. W. S. Rees, Jr. , at Imperial College with Prof. Sir G. Wilkinson, FRS and Prof. P. O'Brien. He was a fixed-term lecturer in the Electronic Materials Group in the Department of Chemistry, Imperial College, London. He then worked for a start-up company - Amedis Pharmaceuticals Ltd, UK (later acquired by Paradigm Therapeutics Ltd, UK) initially running their chemistry function and this role later developed into being the Competitive Intelligence, Cheminformatics and Information Manager for the company (2001-2005). He moved back to academia taking a position in the Chemistry Dept. at UCC in 2005.

Research Interests

Dr. Otway's principal teaching and research interests are in Organometallic Chemistry, Main Group & Lanthanide Chemistry and Inorganic Materials Chemistry. He is part of a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded (4.2 million euro) Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) which is led by Prof. Martyn Pemble @ the Tyndall - this is called FORME - Functional Oxide and Related Materials for Electronics

Current research is directed towards the following topics:

  • Organometallic Chemistry of the Main Group and Lanthanide metals with especially (but not exclusively) pnictide or chalcogenide ligands and MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) of thin films of materials.
  • Metal oxide and mixed metal oxide materials for use in microelectronics
  • Deposition and characterization of nanomaterials in mesoporous silicon structures.
  • Novel nano-composite, high-frequency, magnetic materials for future microprocessor power delivery.

Teaching Interests

Head of first year chemistry. Apart the modules that I coordinate, I also teach on modules CM2005 and CM3021.


My objectives in teaching (inorganic) chemistry are of a holistic nature, that is to say, to encourage the student(s) to learn and not to just spoon-feed reams of information to them and then expect them to reproduce that word for word in an examination situation. Whilst it is true that large "blocks" of information need to be imparted to chemistry students, these lectures can be structured such that the students learn that it is the rules and trends (and the all-important exceptions) that need to be understood, learned and applied to real life chemistry problems and situations. 


In my experience the qualities of a good teacher that I aspire to could be summarised as: enthusiastic, confident, active, organised, engaging, passionate, flexible, personable, approachable, not afraid to fail, and not disparaging. A motto that I use in my classes is "the only stupid question is the one that you don't ask, so don't be afraid to ask".
