Alicia is a lecturer and researcher in the School of Education, University College Cork. Her research employs sociocultural theory to explore issues highly relevant to education and learning. These include: adolescent literacies in and out of school, language and identity, educational discourses and neuroscientific perspectives on literacy and learning. Her most recent research project investigated the professional work place learning of experienced teachers and school principals.

Research Interests

Investigating educative discourses (such as neuroscience) to uncover (and question) representations of selfhood, learning, participation etc. within these discourses

Alicia's co authored book Networks of Mind – Learning, Culture, Neuroscience explores the ascendancy of neuroscience in educative discourse and probes what real insights this new trend has for educators. Problematizing the discourse itself and setting it alongside and analysing it through a sociocultural discourse each chapter of this books provides a very interesting point of departure for future research in this area – both in terms of investigating the insights developments in neuroscience may have for education, but also questioning and challenging these insights through a focus on practice and every day experience.

ELINET Project Team Member - International research in literacy

The European Literacy Policy Network ELINET was initiated to gather and analyze policy information; exchange policy approaches, good practice, and initiatives and raise awareness of the importance of acting now to reduce the number of children, young people and adults with low literacy skills by 2020. ELINET is formed of 79 partner organizations from 28 countries. The network has received funding from the European Commission to complete a two year work program. During this time, it will develop tools that can be used by different members as well as supporting existing and encouraging new activities.

The role of the University in Initial Teacher Education and in the support of professional practice in Irish schools

The IRCHSS funded VIP (Voice, Identity and Participation) Project focused on the importance of a discussion of issues such as inclusion, student voice and participation in primary and secondary schools in Ireland from the point of view of teachers, resource teachers and principals in theme but at the heart of its method was the support of professional practice in and across a range of primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland. Also unique in this project was its focus on learning through teaching led knowledge exchange. Establishing, developing and supporting networks of professional practice Alicia's experience on this project can be extended in further research projects in many ways.

Adolescent literacies / New - socio literacies / Digital literacies / Literacy as identity in practice / Literacy as social practice

Alicia's previous research centres on adolescent literacies and learning in and out of school and on online spaces such as Facebook and Bebo.  Coming from a sociocultural perspective Alicia is very interested in representations of self in different contexts – home, school, with peer groups... and in different modes – digital, visual, written, spoken... She is very interested in the role of the new technologies in designing opportunities for learning and the power of a social understanding of literacy and learning
