Research Profile

Biography

Prof. Suzanne Timmons qualified from UCC and trained in Ireland, the UK and the US. She is a geriatrician and works 50% clinically, in the acute hospital setting and in rehabilitation. She is the first Clinical Lead for Dementia for the Republic of Ireland, since 2017. In UCC, she is based in the Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation, School of Medicine.

Her academic commitments include being Programme Director for the MSc in Older Person Rehabilitation, since 2011, and the new MSc in Dementia, since 2018, as well as the supervision of research MSc and doctoral students. She has a keen interest in postgraduate interdisciplinary education and research. Her research interests focus on neurodegenerative disease in older people, particularly dementia and PD, spanning basic science translation, diagnostic tool validation, health service research (especially models of care), clinical trials, technology in rehab, exercise and risk reduction.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on neurodegenerative disease in older people:
Acute hospital dementia/delirium: I was the co-lead for INAD, the Irish National Audit of Dementia (2013-2014), the Northern Ireland Audit of Dementia (2014/2015) and INAD-2 (2019-2020); and President of the Irish Delirium Society (2016-2018). I have completed HRB-funded research projects into the course and long-term outcome of older people with dementia admitted to acute hospitals; the incidence and indicators of in-hospital delirium in older people; and validated a delirium screening tool for use in the ED. I led the Genio/HSE co-funded healthcare improvement project to promote integrated care of people with dementia in Cork (2014-2018).
Other current research in the area of dementia includes psychotropic prescribing in Nursing Homes (I also co-led National Clinical Guideline No. 21, on this topic); respite provision to people with dementia (in collaboration with DCU); and palliative care needs in people with dementia (Irish Hospirce Foundation) and current HRB funded national service model development project. I'm a co-investigator on a JPND-funded study of family support intervention around palliative care decisions for people with dementia in residential care.
I run a multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic in Cork and my research interests in Parkinson’s disease include neurobiochemistry (e.g. signalling pathways in peripheral blood cells as potential biomarkers for PD), altered gut microbiota in PD, and symptom control/ palliative care. I led the development of a National Guidelines for Palliative Care in Parkinson's disease (2016). My current research is focussed on non-invasive monitoring of motor function in PD (JPND and industry/EI funding) and national health service provision (HRB funding).

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

I am the programme coordinator for the postgraduate programme in Older Person Rehabilitation at UCC, which I set up in 2011. This is the only interdisciplinary programme of its kind in Ireland/ UK; offered to healthcare workers including nurses, doctors, and therapists. Interdisciplinary working and respect is a core programme principle, along with person-focussed rehabilitation and goal-setting.
I am the module cooordinator for several taught modules.
I am also the programme coordinator for the new postgraduate programme in Dementia at UCC, which began in Sept 2018.

I am a member of the School of Medicine Research and Postgraduate Affairs Committee; and am involved in national education initiatives to improve the care of older people. I provide lectures for RCPI national training events, and am an external reviewer for RCPI educational modules and training curricula.

I am a partner in an Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance to develop an online MSc in Active Ageing and Age Friendly Society (2020-2023), working with partners in Finland, Austria, Greece, Portugal and Slovenia. I lead or co-lead several work packages (learning needs analysis; programme framework development; quality assurance processes).
