Brian Murphy

Biography

Dr Brian Murphy is a staff member in the School of Education since September 2000. He is a Senior Lecturer and is course leader for the Professional Master of Education (PME) initial teacher education programme for post-primary teachers. His research interests are in the areas of language and literacy pedagogy and policy as well as in all aspects of teacher education. He has worked extensively on national policy issues pertaining to literacy with the Irish Department of Educational and Skills. He is an invited member of the Adolescent Literacy Committee of the International Literacy Association He is a member of the National OECD PISA Advisory Committee for Ireland and a former member of the Executive Committee of the Literacy Association of Ireland (LAI), as well as the Irish representative on the Federation of European Literacy Associations.

Research Interests

Dr Brian Murphy’s research interest lies in the area of language and literacy, pedagogy and policy as well as on second language teaching and learning. Brian participated in the LETs study, publishing as lead writer a chapter on Language, Literacy and Literature and several co-authored pieces in peer-reviewed journals on various aspects of literacy development. Brian has encouraged postgraduate students to publish and along with Book chapters for the Reading Association of Ireland, has published 3 international peer-reviewed articles in this format. Arising from his research profile in the literacy area, Brian has a recognised presence and makes significant contributions to national policy and research work in the area being the invited literacy expert on the PISA Executive Committee for Ireland; offering CPD to the Inspectorate of schools in the literacy area and being an invited member of the Department of Education and Skill's Advisory Committtee on the implementation of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy. Brian is a member of the Executive Committee of the Reading Association of Ireland and the sole nominated Irish representative on the the Federation of European Literacy Associations (a pan European literacy policy and research network). Brian has also worked in the gender aspect of language learning, publishing on best practice in peer reviewed journals and also in DVD and newspaper article formats. He is a regular and frequent contributor at conferences and workshops on the topic of literacy and as leader of the new PME programme in teacher education, he presents frequently to Principals and educational partners (over 50 times in the review period. Brian has also been successfully awarded funds from the UCC College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science Research Support Fund in 2011-2012; 2012-2013; 2013-2014; and in 2014-2015

I am Programme Co-ordinator of the two-year Professional Master of Education initial post-primary teacher education programme, which began in the School of Education in September 2014. This is the flagship programme of the UCC School of Education with over 240 full-time students.I was previously co-ordinator of the Masters in Education (M.Ed.) (modular programme) in the period 2008-2013, which is a taught continuing professional development focused course for teachers allowing students to select and construct their own professional specialisation from the suite of available taught modules.
