I have been a lecturer in education in the School of Education, University College Cork since September 2008. Prior to this position, I worked as a full-time researcher in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, and also as a primary school teacher in Dublin 15.
Currently, I am working on the following:

A book entitled The Politics of Compulsive Education: Racism and Learner-Citizenship, to be published in November 2014 by Routledge. This book examines the mutual rise of modern education and racism, from the Imperial Age to the Global Age. Using a variety of concepts and in-depth research, it poses new ways of framing and furthering the existing scholarship on racism, migrations and education. This book is being completed with the support of an Irish Research Council New Foundations 2014 Award.

I am the Principal Investigator of the study Making Communion: Disappearing and Emerging Forms of Childhood in Ireland. This is an Irish Research Council Collaborative Scholars awarded project which investigates the changing nature of 'Irish' childhoods, issues of school 'choice' and availability, and matters of inclusion and exclusion in past and present childhoods. Dr. Yafa Shanneik, formerly of the Study of Religions Department, UCC, is working with me on this project.

I am also a member of the research team on Exploring the Commercialisation and Sexualisation of Childhood in Ireland.  The study is led by Dr. Elizabeth Kiely, School of Applied Social Studies, UCC, and co-investigators are Dr. Gill Harold, UCC, Dr. Debbie Ging, DCU and Dr. Máire Leane, UCC. The study is funded by the government Department of Children and Youth Affairs (see http://www.dcya.gov.ie/viewdoc.asp?fn=/documents/Research/CommericalSexualisationAbstract.htm). We held a conference on these issues in Spring 2014.

I was a member of the UCC-based team hosting the international Conference 'Crisis, Mobility and New Forms of Migration'. This was held in UCC on 2nd-4th September 2014, and was funded by the UCC Strategic Research Fund. See http://migration2014.wordpress.com for details on the conference.
