Research Profile

Biography

Having completed an undergraduate degree in Drama and Theatre Studies with French at Trinity College Dublin, I did an MA in Film Studies in University College Dublin. This led me back to Trinity where I refined my research into film, and received my PhD there in 2004. My research concentrated on the relationship between the Abbey Theatre and cinema from the beginning of the sound period until the 1960s. More recently my focus has been on contemporary Irish film and filmmakers, and I participate in regional, national and international cinema-related cultural events with a view to allowing my institutional research to have a broader cultural impact. (My recurring participation has entailed public interviews, seminars, Q and A sessions, and pre- and post-screening discussions in institutions, and at events, including the Schull Fastnet Film Festival, the Cork International Film Festival, the Irish Film Institute, the Rome Ireland Film Festival, and several universities.)

Research Interests

With on-going interest in the history of Irish cinema - notably the relationship between Irish theatre and film - I have continued to develop thematic strands from my earliest research on aesthetics, theoretical and textual analysis, into the contemporary context. This includes approaches to post-1990s Irish visual culture informed by a variety of paradigms from gender, genre, and star studies, to poststructural, postnational and postmodern frameworks. My research into the aesthetic features of the visual media considered include performance studies, technical applications and range from amateur filmmaking to the professional auteur.      I am currently working on a monograph on the films and television work of Lenny Abrahamson, to be published by Bloomsbury in 2017.
