I possess a wealth of experience as a researcher across multiple archives in Ireland, the UK, Europe and the US. My published works in Anglo-French-American nuclear diplomacy and NATO politics, the history of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, European atomic cooperation, and Irish foreign policy and diplomacy attest to my expertise. My interests span 20th-century Europe, European integration, nuclear history, the Cold War, Irish neutrality, Irish-German relations, the Anglo-American 'Special Relationship' and Anglo-French relations.
I regularly deliver invited papers on my specialisms at national and international conferences, including keynotes, throughout Ireland, the UK, Europe, Asia and the US, further solidifying my leadership in the academic community.
My commitment to the academic and professional community is evident in my leadership roles. I am the former chair of the Royal Irish Academy’s International Affairs Standing Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee on the Dictionary of Irish Biography (Cambridge University Press). I also serve as the editor of Irish Studies in International Affairs.
I have served as a principal investigator or member of various consortia, with a solid track record of research funding from a variety of external sources, including the Irish Research Council, the European Parliament, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, National University of Ireland, PRTLI, HEA North-South Research Programme etc. I have supervised four IRC Government of Ireland PhD Scholars and mentored one IRC Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow. I have supervised 10 PhD's, 2 MPhils and approximately 150 MAs.
My contributions to various cognate programmes, including European Studies, History, Politics, Strategic Studies and International Relations, have been marked by extensive leadership experience. I currently serve as the director of the MA in International Relations (History) and have previously led the MA in History, MA in Strategic Studies, BA European Studies, and BA and MA Politics. My leadership roles at programme and curriculum levels have allowed me to shape the academic direction of these programs.
