Research Profile

Frank Van Pelt

Biography

Frank van Pelt received a BSc in Chemistry and MSc in Biochemistry with Toxicology from the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands. This was followed by a PhD project at the Research Institute of Toxicology, University of Utrecht in collaboration with RCC Notox,`s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands investigating the use of  cultured human keratinocytes for toxicological screenings methods and was awarded a PhD in Toxicology from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1991. Subsequently he held a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London, UK for two years where he investigated the mechanisms halothane-induced liver disease. He then spend one year as a research scientist at the Academic Department of Anaesthetics, St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London UK investigating the formation of a toxic degradation product of sevoflurane in closed and low-flow anaesthetic systems. This was followed by an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Medical School Hannover, Germany where his research involved the investigation of the mechanisms underlying anticonvulsant induced hepatitis. In October 1995, he joined Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University College Cork as a lecturer in Toxicology/ Biochemical Pharmacology and he was promoted to senior lecturer in October 2004.

Dr. van Pelt is a Registered Toxicologist in Ireland and an Eurotox Registered Toxicologist. He was Vice-president of the Irish Society of Toxicology 2005-2007 and President of the Irish Society of Toxicology 2007-2009
