Research Profile

Therese Ruane-O'Hora

Biography

Having initially qualified as a Nurse I went on to complete a BSc in Physiology and later my PhD.  I was appointed as a Lecturer in The Dept of Physiology, UCC in 2003.

Research Interests

Physiological research is vital for investigations into a variety of cardiovascular disease states e.g. atherosclerosis and diabetes, both of which are part of UCC's thematic research areas. .  We are interested in the physiology and pathophysiology of the vascular glycocalyx.  This work, is carried out in collaboration with colleagues in the UK and elsewhere in Ireland.  In addition, I have involved in a research project with The School of Pharmacy in UCC, to investigate methods of drug delivery.  I have also recently carried out work for the School of Engineering.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

I have overall responsibility for all aspects of the physiology programme for the BSc Nursing Degree at UCC,  involving 400 students accross 2 years of the programme, including organising the physiology contribution to the new curriculum which rolled out in 2012-2013.  I had a significant input (in conjunction with an MSc multi-media student) into the design and setting up of a web based multi-media Introductory Physiology Course for mature students.  Many of these students do not have a scientific backround and may have been out of a study environment for some time. The course is made available to them a few weeks before the start of formal teaching, and they have unlimited access thereafter.

For 2013-2014 I am taking up the role of Module Coordinator for our BSc research module PL4004. I will also become the overall year coordinator for year 4 for our BSc Physiology degree.

I take part in a variety of activities to promote an awareness of the Dept. of Physiology outside of UCC, including secondary school days, as they arise.

I also lecture on our BSc Physiology degree programme together with lecturing on the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy programmes.

I contribute some teaching to Marymount Hospice as part of their annual programme of continuing education for medical and paramedical staff.
