Biography
Research Interests
I am an experienced Cardiovascular Epidemiologist and Clinical Trialist with an outstanding record in Population Health and Health Services Research and its effective translation for improved health. I have over 155 publications, including over 50 articles in peer reviewed international journals with approximately 10,000 citations, have generated ~€5 million in research grant funding since my appointment to UCC in 2011 and supervise a multi-disciplinary research team of 15. I have a background and training in clinical medicine, epidemiology and public health and during my training have been the recipient of prestigious Wellcome Trust and Paul Beeson (NIH K08 career development award) Fellowships. Since my appointment at UCC I have developed links with clinical colleagues in primary care, public health and hospital medicine including diabetes medicine and I have been successful in obtaining funding based on these multi-disciplinary teams (HRB/ICE/2012/12 and HRB/HPF/2012/14).I have extensive experience in chronic disease epidemiology and global burden of disease. I have a long standing interest in improving outcomes for people with diabetes and previous work resulted in a landmark Lancet publication which demonstrated the benefit of statins in reducing morbidity and mortality in people with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In 2013 I was one of 6 recipients nationally of a HRB Research Leader Award in partnership with the National Clinical Programme in Diabetes. The overall vision for the programme of research is to improve care for people with diabetes in Ireland and to reduce the preventable economic and societal burden of diabetes.
I am an experienced clinical trialist and am particularly interested in primary prevention based interventions. I worked previously as a co-investigator on the NIH funded ASPREE trial (role of aspirin in primary prevention among older people at risk of CVD) and I am currently the Irish lead PI for a multi-centre EU FP7 funded clinical trial, TRUST (placebo controlled trial of thyroxine in community dwelling older people with subclinical hypothyroidism). My role as a recognised leader in population research in primary care in Ireland is evidenced by the appointment of Dr. Audrey Russell, the first Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) academic GP, who is working on TRUST under my mentorship. I have developed a network of over 200 primary care physicians who are interested in research and who are actively involved in recruitment for TRUST.
I have extensive expertise and experience in systematic reviews and meta-analysis and encourage all of my PhD students to undertake a review at the outset of their programme of research. This has resulted in a large number of publications in peer reviewed journals and the development of additional expertise in this area in our department including the recent award of a Cochrane Fellowship.
I am a co-PI of TILDA (the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing) and am currently involved in the analysis of data from TILDA and the Mitchelstown cohorts. Research projects in this area have included the impact of early life experiences on adult physical and mental well-being as well as the impact of diet and physical activity on health outcomes.

Teaching Activities
Teaching Interests
Objectives in Teaching My objectives in teaching are: 1. To provide all of my students with an understanding of the basic concepts of epidemiology. In particular I try to convey to them the fundamental importance of the discipline. 2. To convey to the students my own enthusiasm for the subject and hopefully to inspire similar enthusiasm about the topic in them. 3. To encourage those students with a particular interest in the subject to explore the concepts in more depth. Methods you use to seek those objectives I use a combination of formal and informal teaching sessions including lectures; small group sessions; computer based learning sessions; tutorials; and scheduled ‘office hours’ to provide advice on an individual basis. With formal lectures I prepare my lectures using powerpoint slides with the main points of the lectures on these slides. The slides are provided to the students as downloadable handouts prior to the lectures. I find that this approach allows the students to actively engage with the lectures by freeing them from the necessity of taking detailed notes. At the same time the students have the opportunity to personalise their lectures by noting down particular examples or explanations that may not be included in the handouts. In the small group sessions I use problem based learning. These sessions begin with a description of an interesting research question from the medical literature or indeed from the news. The students discuss the question and potential approaches to answering the questions. The students are encouraged to use the concepts that they have learned about in their lectures when planning their study design. A list of questions is provided to guide their discussion but they are also encouraged to formulate their own responses. In the computer sessions, the students learn practical skills such as how to use statistical software to report simple descriptive statistics and to undertake basic data analysis. A personal assessment of your results in seeking those objectives I think that I have been successful in providing my students with an understanding of the basic concepts of epidemiology and an appreciation of the key importance of the discipline. I have received positive formal and informal feedback from students in their assessment of my teaching. I have consistently scored highly on the feedback from BSc, MPH and PhD students. My average score (out of 5) on my most recent teaching was 4.7. I have also compiled written comments from students who have emphasised the relevance of the content that I teach as well as reporting enjoying the interactive nature of the sessions. Three students approached me following a recent lecture on research methods to medical students to enquire about research opportunities with my research group. 1. Teaching innovation I introduced a new 5 credit module in meta-analysis to the MPH advanced epidemiology programme. This module provided the students with the opportunity to undertake a review and meta-analysis and has resulted in a number of publications. I also initiated the tool kit session that is co-ordinated by the PhD students but is moderated by a senior faculty member. I excel at engaging with students and explaining complex concepts in simple terms. Academic Practice and E-learning - I participated in the following programmes between 2008 and 2010:- Workshop on Linking Levels, Oucomes and Assessment, Centre for Academic Practice and E-learning (CAPSL) TCD
- 6 session course on Creating a Reflective Teaching Portfolio, CAPSL, TCD
