Biography
Clare O'Sullivan gained her Masters degree in Advanced Healthcare Practice (1st Hons) from University College Cork, Ireland and her Bachelors in Occupational Therapy (1st Hons) from The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. She previously completed a Bachelors Social Science (2.1 Hons) degree at the University College Cork, Ireland, following which she worked in international banking in London for years.
Clare has worked in a variety of occupational therapy settings with adults and older adults including the acute hospital, community services and various project positions in Australia and Ireland. She was the consultant occupational therapist to a General Practice and also established a private practice in Brisbane, Australia completing home assessments for adults. Clare then managed the Allied Health Referral Service in Brisbane North. As well as co-ordinating the referrals service for Brisbane North, this also entailed completing research reviews and identifying community needs as well as developing strategies for improved service delivery for Nutrition/Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Social Work and Speech Pathology services. On returning to Ireland in 2001 Clare worked in Community Occupational Therapy services in Cork.
In 2004 Clare was appointed to the position of Director of Practice Education in the newly developed Department of Occupational Therapy at University College Cork. She was later employed as Year Three Coordinator and Lecturer and developed the undergraduate year three honours programme which focuses on occupational therapy applied to adults and older adults. She has also developed small group interactive, interprofessional education sessions with occupational therapy, medical, pharmacy, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy students, which was awarded a National Academy for Integration of Research & Teaching & Learning grant. She was awarded the President's Excellence in Teaching award in 2012.
Clare is also currently the Director of Postgraduate Education for the School of Clinical Therapies and co-ordinates, teaches and supervises research projects on the taught Masters in Evidence Based Therapy Practice. Clare's Masters dissertation focused on an exploration of older adults' participation in leisure activities post stroke in the Irish context. Clare completed a Teaching and Learning Certificate in Higher Education in 2009 and is completing a PhD with the School of Education at UCC.
Clare is an executive committee member and the national therapy representative to the Irish Gerontological Society. She is also an executive committee member and membership secretary to the Rehabilitation and Therapy Research Society. She is a member, past treasurer and council member of the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland.
Research Interests
Clare's research interests focus both on occupational therapy practice and professional healthcare education, as well as educational gerontology.
Clinically, her research focus is on occupational therapy practice with adults post stroke and stroke rehabilitation. In this area she is especially interested in the transition from hospital to community living and participation in leisure activities. Her qualitative Masters dissertation titled "An exploration of participation in leisure activities post stroke", employed the phenomenological approach to explore how individuals experienced participating in leisure occupations post stroke.
Educationally, her research focus is on professional education in the health sciences in contemporary Ireland. She is particularly interested in the learning needs of undergraduate and postgraduate occupational therapists and the implications for occupational therapy professional practice. She is completing a PhD in the area of educational gerontology researching participation in the occupation of education and its contribution to health and wellbeing in older adults lives in Ireland.

Teaching Activities
Teaching Interests
Clare is responsible for coordinating year three of the BSc in Occupational Therapy which focuses on occupational therapy applied to adults and older adults. She also supervises year four honours research projects.
She is Director of Postgraduate Education and coordinates the taught MSc in Evidence Based Therapy Practice for the School of Clinical Therapies. She teaches the Educating for Professional Practice MSc module and supervises MSc dissertations.
