Biography:
My initial degree was in classical languages, ancient history and philosophy. Following this I took postgraduate degrees in Linguistics, and then at postdoctoral level specialised in the application of Linguistics to child language development and disorders, supervised by David Crystal at the University of Reading. I joined the Department of Linguistic Science at the University of Reading as a lecturer in 1975, and worked there until 1995, when I moved to the University of Hong Kong. Most of my work till then had been on language learning in English-speaking children but I was able in Hong Kong to extend my research interests in language development and impairment to children speaking Chinese languages. In 2003 I moved to University College Cork, and learned something about the vocabulary development of Irish-speaking children through collaboration with Ciara O'Toole. I have always valued and benefitted from colaboration in research: in Reading, with David Crystal and Michael Garman, and later Richard Ingham, Gabriel King and Christina Schelletter; in Hong Kong with Stephanie Stokes, Twila Tardif, Anita Wong and Larry Leonard; in Cork with Ciara O'Toole and Robert Fourie.
