Biography
Dr Stuart Collins received his BSc. Degree in Chemistry, UCC in 1998 and then did his PhD. in Organic Chemistry at U.C.C. under the supervision of Prof. Anita Maguire entitled "alpha-Diazosulfoxides-Synthesis and Transformations to alpha-Oxo Sulfines." He decided to follow an academic career path and worked on two Postdoctoral Research projects, the first on development of novel methodology for the synthesis of phosphononucleosides as antiviral agents (University College Cork and Tanaud Inc. Ireland) and the second on the asymmetric synthesis of unnatural amino acids (University College Cork and the Conway Institute University College Dublin). He has has been a lecturer in Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry here in UCC since 2004 and became a Senior Lecturer in 2019. He is currently the Director of the BSc Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds (CPC) programme and Chair of Teaching and Learning in the SOC. He is a Principal Investigator (PI) in the School of Chemistry and the Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility (ABCRF) and a Funded Investigator (FI) the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), an SFI funded collaboration involving academia and industry. As of 2024, Dr. Collins has supervised 25 PhD students with 15 PhD students having completed and currently 10 PhD students in his research group. He has also supervised 4 MSc by Research students. The majority of the past students from his group are currently employed in the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland. There have been 11 Enterprise Partnership IRCSET/IRC PhD students in his research group (sponsored by GSK, Thermo, MSD, Pfizer, Lilly and Janssen), 10 Government of Ireland IRCSET/IRC sponsored PhD students, 3 SFI (SSPC) funded students and 1 DAFF (FIRM) funded student, with total grant income €2.88M; €1.46M over the period 2019-2024.Research Interests
My research is focused mainly in the area of natural product synthesis and organic synthetic methodology with a particular emphasis on continuous processing and flow chemistry. The synthesis of small organic molecules that show biological activity against specific targets such as cancer, leukaemia, HIV etc. is a key overall theme of the group. I have supervised 25 PhD students with 15 graduated and currently 10 PhD students in the group. There have been 11 Enterprise Partnership IRC PhD students in my research group (sponsored by GSK, Thermo, MSD, Pfizer, Eli Lilly and Janssen), 10 Government of Ireland IRC sponsored PhD students, 3 SFI (SSPC) funded students and 1 DAFF (FIRM) funded PhD student. Over the past 5 years I have also supervised 20 Final Year Projects (17 Chemistry/CPC and 3 Pharmacy) and 3 UREKA SFI students and 4 Visiting Masters students from Poitiers University and Clermont-Ferrand, France.Recent areas of research in the group:

SFI/ABCRF UREKA SITE Site coordinator and member of the organizing committee for the UCC UPCRO (Undergraduate PharmaChemical Research Opportunities) site in 2007, 2008 and 2009 – this SFI funded initiative allowed the ABCRF to host a research site for undergraduate students both national and international for 10 weeks of the summer. In addition to the core research projects, the site also offered courses such as literature searching, presentation skills, scientific writing, analytical techniques etc. and site visits to local pharmaceutical industries. | |

Designed and developed the Pharmaceutical Analysis section of PF6200 Chemistry of Pharmaceutical compounds which is a 10 credit module in the MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems, School of Pharmacy, UCC which is done through distance learning. I have been actively involved in the planning and development of the MSc course at all stages.
Coordinator of the Postgraduate modules CM6101/7002/7003/7006 in Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (2007-2018) and have been instrumental in the planning and set up of these modules and how the courses run over the past 11 years. These modules involve research seminars given by postgraduate students and also teaching of advanced organic synthesis to these postgraduates by staff through problem sets and tutorials.
