Biography

Research Interests

My overall research strategy has been two-pronged: (i) to help develop streams of research within the institute where I work that will help promote the viability of the institute, (ii) to carry out a program of basic research to tackle some outstanding problems in the field of constraint satisfaction.

Stratetgy (i) has both applied and conceptual aspects. The applied aspects involve targeting fields of application where, (i) constraint technology is likely to be useful, (ii) applying the technology is likely to involve a long-term commitment to development; put another way, the focus is on cultivating new areas of application rather than simply developing specific applications of the technology, (iii) exploring integrative topics, where constraint technology is combined with other technologies; originally, the specific other technologies were decision analysis and knowledge representation. Currently I am working on applications in the field of environmental engineering together with allied fields such as environmental data analysis.

Strategy (ii) has been concerned with a specific topic of basic research: the nature of ordering heuristics in constraint satisfaction search. This is still an area that is relatively poorly understood.

During the past several years, research falling under strategy (i) has proceeded better than expected. This is due in large part to a collaboration with a group in the Centre for Environmental Technology at the Public Research Centre Henri Tudor in Luxembourg. This focus of this work has been Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and in particular combining LCA with optimization methods. Begining in 2009 we have presented work in a number of venues including three SETAC conferences (SETAC = Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry), and, in the present year (2014), at the Tenth Symposium on Tools and Methods for Competitive Engineering and the International Conference on Computer Science Applications.

The work under strategy (ii) has resulted in a stream of conference and journal papers which have served to introduce some novel ideas on the topic of variable ordering heuristics for constraint satisfaction problems. As a result of this work, we now have more articulated means of characterizing the performance of heuristics (the so-called "policy framework"). We also know something about the basic character of heuristic action.

·    As part of this work, I have been involved in the study of a new class of adaptive heuristics that have advanced the field on the applied side by demonstrating significantly improved performance across a wider range of problem types than was true of classical variable ordering heuristics.

Apart from the third point, I suspect it is still too early to assess the full significance of this work.  I myself think that it will prove to be of fundamental significance (although it remains to be put on a sound formal foundation, since the basic work is empirical), but others may disagree.

Also, in recent years I have returned to problems of local computations designed to simplify constraint satisfaction problems and thus to reduce the effort required to find a solution. This has included some new forms of singleton arc consistency, and, in a more peripheral way, detecting other forms of redundancy in problems, in particular, local forms of "replaceability".
