Emanuel Popovici(SM-IEEE, M-ACM) is a College Lecturer with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork  since 2010. He was with the Department of Microelectronics from 2002 to 2010. Emanuel received a Dipl. Ing. (5 year) degree in Computer Engineering (with a minor in Hardware Design) from the University Politehnica Timisoara in 1997 and a PhD in Microelectronics from University College Cork (National Microelectronics Research Centre) in 2002 respectively. Between 1997 and 2001 he did his research on efficient algorithms and architectures for finite field arithmetic and error control coding within the National Microelectronics Research Centre(now the Tyndall National Institute), Ireland. Prior to his appointment, he was postdoctoral research engineer with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University College Cork working on hardware accelerators for e-commerce.
His research interests include low power embedded systems design for reliable and secure computing and communications. He has published more than 120 papers and co-authored 9 papers distinguished by the IEEE, IET, MIDAS, and IARIA. His research is sponsored by SFI (PI: Modular Quantitative Analysis for Hardware and Software Systems, Mathematics Initiative: Claude Shannon Institute, SRC: Efficient Embedded DSP for Mobile Digital Health, CSET: Clarity the sensor web technology centre, NAP: reliability and cryptography in wireless sensor networks, multi-radio platforms for wireless sensor networks, Internship), Entersprise Ireland(Low Power Transceivers using Error Control Coding, iBAN-Med: Intelligent Body Area Networks for Medical Applications), IDA/Synopsys, NSF, Invest-NI, EU-FP7(STREP, GENESI: Green Sensors for Structural Health Monitoring, FET-OPEN, iRISC: Innovative Reliable Chip Designs from Unreliable Components ), Industry, IRCSET. He mentored the student team who won the prestigious IEEE/IBM Smarter Planet Challenge 2011 with the project iCARE: Improved Health Care Access.

His research lies at the boundaries of Electronic Engineering, Computer Science/ Computer Engineering and Coding/Information Theory.
