East |
This is a general view of the east face of the cross at Downpatrick Co. Down. The panels are difficult to decipher. The cross
head is clearly a depiction of the Crucifixion. Jesus has his arms outstretched at the centre of the cross head and Stephaton
and Longinus are depicted below his arms. (?)2 angels above his arms? The figures at the ends of the cross arms are probably
thieves, flanked by soldiers.
