The Locus project has been ongoing since 1996 in the Dept of Early and Medieval Irish, UCC, under the direction of Professor Pádraig Ó Riain, assisted by Dr Diarmuid Ó Murchadha and Dr Kevin Murray. Its remit is to create a new Historical Dictionary of Irish Place- and Tribal Names to replace the standard historical reference work, Fr Edmund Hogan's Onomasticon Goedelicum (Dublin, 1910), which is now out of date. Thus far the project has secured funding from Toyota Ireland Ltd, PRTLI 1 and the HEA, which has facilitated the employment of a number of postgraduate and postdoctoral scholars to assist in this labour-intensive research.

The project has been at the forefront of multidisciplinary and inter-institutional co-operation. Extensive consultation has taken place with the Placenames Branch of the Ordnance Survey of Ireland, Dublin and the Northern Ireland Place-name Project, Queen's University of Belfast. The Locus project has a formal co-operative link with projects under the title 'The Literary and Cultural Landscapes of Connacht in the Pre-modern and Early Modern Periods', The Centre for the Study of Human Settlement and Historical Change, National University of Ireland, Galway.
