The background of the cross consists of four recessed panels, containing at the left hand upper corner, two small figures
of men sitting facing each other: at the right hand upper corner, four serpents with their tails forming a raised boss of
interlaced-work: at the left hand lower corner, two serpents with their tails forming a raised boss of interlaced work and
a triquetra knot: and at the right hand lower corner, a pair of seated figures, in a slightly different attitude to those
at the top left panel.
