ToC6. Adding a style template (.dot file)

If you have downloaded a template file (or saved it from an email attachment), you can load it in Word and start using it:

    Applying a style template to an existing document (Word 2003)
  1. Go to the the Tools menu and click Templates and Add-Ins

  2. Click the Templates tab

  3. Under Document Template, click the  Attach  button

  4. In the directory window that appears, go to the folder where you downloaded the template (.dot file) and select it

  5. Select Automatically update document styles

  6. Click  OK 

All the Named Styles in that template are now available to use in your Style List (see section 2, ‘Preparation’ for how to set up style display).

    Adding a style template permanently to Word 2003 (also applies to Mac Word 2008)
  1. Go to the the Tools menu and click Templates and Add-Ins

  2. Click the Templates tab

  3. Under Global templates and add-ins, click the Add button

  4. In the directory window that appears, go to the folder where you downloaded the template (.dot file) and select it

  5. In the list of templates, make sure the check box next to the template name is selected

  6. Click  OK 

All the Named Styles in that template will now be available to use in your Style List for all documents you write and edit.
